Many casinos and poker centers have closed down in the United States and many operators now lobby Congress for federal aid.
Casino lobbyists, in the last few days, have spent much time requesting congress for a bailout package and there are asking for something related to what was given to other tourism-related industries that are being struck by the coronavirus.
This package includes direct cash payments, deferred taxes, or special bankruptcy protection, according to the Washington Post. However, the American Gaming Association announced to the newspaper that these casino operators need money to help support their employees who now out of work.
Here is the statement: “As state governments close casinos as a part of the urgent public health response to COVID-19, elected leaders should move just as urgently to support the workers and businesses who will bear the brunt of those effects. Our immediate priorities are actions that provide liquidity to allow us to support employees”
At the moment, lots of casinos in Nevada, New Jersey, and Maryland have been closed – the Seminole Hard Rock’s Tampa location is the recent casino that has been closed.
Even though the pandemic is raging across the States, other casinos have kept operating, but they have laid down certain restrictions to comply with CDC recommendations against large gatherings.
It’s not just commercial casinos that are asking for money from the U.S government. Customary casinos also want part of the aid from the federal government.
The American Gaming Association also requested $18billion in aid from the federal government, according to Fox Business. The natives emphasized that even though it will be paying its employees during this time, it will also help tribal government from defaulting loans and provide adequate amenities such as health and education.
A letter addressed to representatives in the House Native American Caucus reads: “Providing the means for tribal governments to continue paying employees’ salaries and benefits will immensely help this country recover.”
Nevertheless, the U.S Congress has already approved two stimulus packages in response to the pandemic.
It is important to know that the gambling industry supports 1.8 million jobs that are basically out of work for the time being, according to AGA. MGM Resorts alone has already laid off 70,000 employees just a few days to its shutdown.
