How dangerous is the situation and should poker events like the WSOP be canceled due to the Corona Virus?
Corona Virus (COVID-19) has now spread all over the world and the number of infected people is increasing daily. In Germany alone, as of March 9, 2020, there were over 1,000 officially infected people and around 110,000 people worldwide. Major events have been canceled and even soccer games such as today’s Champions League game between Paris Saint-German and Borussia Dortmund take place without spectators, and the German derby between FC Schalke 04 and Borussia Dortmund next weekend will take place in camera. Also in the USA, the ATP tournament in Indian Wells was the first really big event to be canceled.
In Italy, every place is sealed off and residents are under house arrest. As the first major poker tournament, the Triton Masters High Roller Event in Jeju was canceled. Now, there are numerous questions in the room about how to proceed. Many casinos have already closed their doors for fear of the COVID-19 virus. The annual WSOP 2020 in Las Vegas is about to take place and there are rumors that it may be canceled or postponed.
Also, the WPT and PartyPokerLive are thinking about their nearest events and have made some adjustments for the WPT Barcelona event. For the moment, no event has been canceled but nobody knows the outcome in 2 weeks.
How dangerous is the virus really?
It is clear that it spreads very easily, which has shown us the past few weeks. The infectivity is high. The Robert Koch Institute RKI currently assumes that the majority of cases are rather mild. RKI President Lothar H. Wieler spoke of about 85 percent. 15 percent of the cases take a severe course. Based on current knowledge, Wieler estimated the mortality rate at 1-2 percent. The chances of dying from flu are 0.1-0.2 percent.
For a normal adult, the virus is not really dangerous and runs like normal flu. Only older people with a weak immune system are at great risk. The virus should not be underestimated, but it is also no reason to panic, because the information so far is still uncertain. On the one hand, not all infected people are recorded and thousands of people, we probably already had the virus without knowing it, are now healthy again. For example, if the actual number of people infected were much higher than known, this would significantly lower the death rate. Both the numerator and the denominator are not sufficiently known.
The fact is that we are far from reaching the maximum of infections and the virus will spread further. Cancellation of major events or not, the spread is unstoppable. You can see whether it is the right decision to cancel major sporting events and major poker events either way. Even though the virus is harmless for the majority of the population, as already mentioned, older people and sick people with a weak immune system are at risk. The question is whether the cancellation of these events achieves the desired effect that one hopes for. In our opinion, it won’t really change that much, since the whole thing has long been unmanageable and controllable.
An advantage for online poker
Since many people are panicking at the virus at home, stock up on hamster purchases at home and wait until the situation calms down again. Whether one should do that remains to be seen, but unfortunately God has now panicked in different parts of our society. So if the poker players cannot play poker live in the casino, they are of course very happy to switch to online poker. For online poker operator, the whole thing comes in very handy.
