John Juanda

John Juanda shows his Short Deck Skills

John Juanda is the newest poker player to win at the 2019 Triton Poker Montenegro HKD 250,000 Short Deck Event for HKD 4,720,000 ($613,600). In Juanda’s path to victory, he outclassed entries such as Daniel Dvoress heads-up and Dan “Jungleman Cates” at the final table.

It is necessary to know that this recent win puts Juanda with more than $25 million in lifetime tournament winnings, which is 14th all-time.

Additionally, this is the second time Juanda has won the tournament. Before engaging in the 2019 Triton Poker Montenegro HKD 250,000 Short Deck Event, he won Triton Poker Macau HKD 1,000,000 Main Event in October 2017 for HKD 22,410,400 ($2,872,299). At the moment, Juanda’s total earnings in live tournaments are more than $25 million.

Furthermore, Juanda reported he has only been playing short-deck poker for only 9 months and was surprised he could win.

He stated after winning the Titan Poker Tournament: “It feels great. Every time you win a tournament like this, it’s an amazing feeling.”

The final stage of the tournament had twelve players do battle for the prize. However, the Triton Poker was in the money after Jesus Cortes, Winfried Yu, and Danny Tang were removed from the stage.

At the games, the first player to be eliminated from the stage was Triton Poker Co-Founder Paul Phua; he then his jacks into the queen retained by Daniel Dvoress.

There were players who struck the rail at the final table and the first was Michael Soyza and he finished at the 7th place for HKD 780,000 ($101,400). The second player to hit the rail was Daniel Cates, who finished 6th place for HKD 980,000 ($127,400) – due to the fact that his aces could not win against Wai Kin Yong’s jacks during play.

It is also necessary to know that during the game, Juanda incorrectly played quad sixes on a board that contains 3 aces against Sergei Lebedev – thinking his opponent had the aces. But Lebedev was able to dodge Juanda’s play even though he just a king-jack in his hand. However, even though Lebedev came through this time, he was eliminated and finished at 5th place for HKD 1,250,000 ($162,500) as his queen-jack could not getting him anywhere against Peter Jetten.

Peter Jetten was also eliminated in the fourth round of the event for HKD 1,620,000 ($210,600). He got his hands all-in with a queen-ten against Juanda but was defeated.

Juanda also went to eliminate another opponent called Yong. Yong was eliminated in the 3rd place after being defeated by Juanda’s kings.

Juanda engaged Dvoress at the final round in which they began heads-up play with chips. However, Juanda incorrectly played an open-ended straight flush draw with queen-jack suited against Dvoress who held pockets aces and the nut flush draw. It is necessary to note that the board paired on the turn and paired in double on the river. Juanda was able to win the round after his flush in hand and his chips defeated Dvoress at the final round.
