Unibet cancels all scheduled live tournaments for this year and instead hosts them online
Unibet has also been beaten by the coronavirus and has announced that it will not be hosting any live tournaments in 2020. All events that were planned for 2020 are now held online to give the players at least a little comfort. These included two major events that were planned for the Unibet Open in September and December.
The ‘Head of Poker’ at Unibet, Kris Bergvall, said: The spread of COVID-19 has put the world in an exceptional and uncertain situation which lead to the decision to move the Unibet Open 2020 season online. We made the pivot from live to online because we realized, that we would not be able to guarantee the safety of players and staff if we proceeded with the original schedule.
Nataly Sopacuaperu, Head of Events at Unibet added: “This is not a decision we have taken lightly, we fully understand the impact to our partners and land-based venues, however as a priority, we must not only consider the health of our customers but also the difficulty for recreational players with regards to planning trips around uncertainty.
The move from Unibet comes a little surprising, considering that some live casinos are currently working on plans to open their doors again. Of course, everything will change a bit and will no longer work as it did before Corona, but many casinos plan to start slowly again in the summer. However, of course you have to say that there is a big difference when a casino opens normally again or to organize a big poker tournament with hundreds or thousands of players.
Even if you had decided not to cancel the events and had found a way to organize them, you can very much doubt that the enthusiasm would have been so great because many people will continue to be very careful until there is a vaccine against COVID-19.
Unibet brand ambassador David Lappin can definitely see something positive in the decision, as there is now more planning security for the rest of the year: There is no question that this decision was made with a heavy heart but being able to plan the rest of 2020 with conviction guarantees the best experience for our customers.
