A poker tournament is a game in which the participating players pay a certain amount, the buy-in, into a prize pool, which they then play among themselves. Each participant will receive the same number of chips at the beginning of the tournament and one player will be eliminated if he has lost all his chips. In a special form, the rebuy tournament, he can also buy new chips in the early phase, the so-called rebuy phase.

The distribution of the prize money is proportional or staggered according to placement or time of departure. How this is done is determined by the payout structure or payout structure, which determines from which placement there is even a profit and with which distribution key the money is distributed to the individual placements. Instead of money, of course, prizes or places in another tournament may be the prize pool.
