A Big Blind is a nominal obligatory bet made at the start of a hand by the player two seats to the left of the Dealer.
The amount is usually twice that of the Small Blind, which is paid in by the player one seat to the right of the Big Blind, and the Blinds are paid in order to generate action by virtue of there already being chips to be won in the middle.
Note that the Dealer Button travels clockwise around the table, one seat at a time, the point being that after an ‘orbit’ of hands every player has had their turn in the Blinds.
In a tournament setting the value of the Blinds increases over time, whereas in a Cash game they remain constant (e.g. $0.25/$0.50 in a so-called $50 Max game).
